Matera, located in the region of Basilicata, is one of the world’s oldest continuously inhabited cities, with a history dating back over 9,000 years, famous for the “Sassi” districts: ancient neighborhoods carved directly into limestone cliffs, designated as UNESCO World Heritage site! This ancient district is divided into two main sections: Sasso Caveoso and Sasso Barisano, both filled with stone dwellings, historic churches such as the Church of S. Pietro Barisano, the Church of St. Augustine, and fascinating cave structures.
